FOLK Music did exist way BEFORE 1976 -PART 1 ============================================

This post is for those learned fools and blind Illayaraja devotees who time and again claim that folk music was introduced to TFM in 1976 like they say Bharathiraja brought cinema out of sets ha ha .. Many directors like Sridhar, KB sir, ACT, P.Madhavan, K.Shankar all have made films in various villages and other locations. This Raja(Illayaraja, Bharathiraja)gang want to spread false claim stating they did everthing first. Come on guys. Music is an ocean and one cannot own it. Stalwarts like G.Ramananathan, K.V.Mahadevan, MSV-TKR, T.G.Lingappa, S.Dakshinamurthy,S.Rajeswararao,T.R.Pappa, Ghantasala and many more legends have given varieties of FOLK songs and in this post i'll cover a few to showcase that FOLK music existed before 1976 and every single MD i've mentioned were masters of FOLK while thinking about this post I was asking myself how back should i go to showcase that Naatupura isai/padalgal featured in tamil movies and decided to start from Gemini studio's Iconic "Chandralekha"(1948) S.Rajeswararao one of the finest composers of Indian cinema did music for Chandralekha. who can forget the climax Drum dance M.S.Sundari bai wife of Kothamangalam subbu sang a beautiful FOLK song tuned by SRR "Padathe Padathe un paatai kettu pulikuttithan bayappadum" a funny folk number sung very well by Sundarai bai. a troll kind of a song in those days.

Another composer who rocked the Film scene with hit after hit was C.R.Subburaman (guru for MSV). He composed a brilliant folk number sung by the one and only Kalaivanar N.S.Krishnan and T.A.Mathuram from the film Nallathambi (1949) yes very famous "Vingyanatha Valarkka porendi" . Udumalai Narayana kavi's lyrics and NSK & Mathuram's rendition makes this a catchy number.

G.Ramanathan who defined Film music with varieties and also pioneer in taking Carnatic music to masses composed a beautiful folk in Manthirikumari(1950) yes "En Erumai kannukutti" sung by Master Subbiah and written by kalaingar Karunanidhi It's a combination of G.Ramanathan and S.M.Subbiah Naidu this time for another beautiful folk number from the film where Legendary Nambiar Samy portrayed 10 different characters (in disguise ofcourse ). Same Master Subbiah has lent his voice for this peppy folk number "Vaazha Pirandhavar Naame"

Next one is from Nadigaiyar Thilagam Savithiri's Debut "Paathala bhairavi" wherein she appears as a dancer in a folk song rendered by Pithapuram Nageswararao & T.G.Saraswathi composed by Ghantasala Master "Naan Matten Neeyum"

The movie which made the future Puratchi thalaivar noticeable and established Nambiar as a cunning villain yes "Sarvathikari" Movie had great songs tuned by Susrala Daskhinamurthy and this one particular song picturized on T.P.Muthulakshmi and A.Karunanithi is a hilarious folk number rendered by S.Dakshinamurthy himself along with U.R.Chandra

Another one from the movie Vanasundari (1951) composed by C.R.Subburaman penned by Udumalai narayana kavi. Vanasundari had the great P.U.Chinnappa pairing with T.R.Rajakumari. P.A.Periyanayagi sang a beautiful folk number Poovo poovu Manam veesum pudhusana poovu picturized on lalitha

The movie where MGR's name appeared as M.G.Ramachandran instead of Ramchandar was "Andhaman Khaidhi" G.Govindarajulu naidu composed the songs. It had a beautiful Folk sung by T.V.Rathinam written by Ku.Sa.Krishnamurthy picturized on beautiful P.K.Saraswathi "Anju rooba notta konja munne maathi michamillai" reality of money value said in simple words

Veteran singer K.Jamunarani started her tamil career with the movie "Valayapathi(1952)" Music was by S.Dakshinamurthy and A.L.Raghavan sang a brilliant folk number "Palli Koodam Bum bum bum" ALR's young boy's voice is the main plus for this song.

Anbu(1953) starring Sivaji, Padmini and T.R.Rajakumari, composed by T.R.Pappa here is a folk song penned by Ka.Mu.Sheriff and sung by A.M.Raja for Nadigar thilagam.

P.Pulliah's Manampol Mangalyam(1953) starring Gemini Ganesh, Savithiri music composed by Adhepalli Ramarao had a beautiful folk by P.Leela and A.M.Raja "Mappillai doi Mappillai doi" lyrics by Kanaga surabi

Same movie had another peppy folk by Jikkiyamma "Nalla caril yerikondu" a funny song performed well by Jikki

Marumagal(1953) featuring N.T.Ramarao and Padmini in lead had beautiful songs composed by C.R.Subburaman while background score was by MSV-TKR. Movie had a beautiful folk song perfomed by Jiki and A.P.Komala picturized on baby saraswathi aka Sachu and Master Sudhakar "chinna chinna veedu katti" an inspiration for Aathoram manaleduthu

Edhirparadhadhu(1953) C.V.Sridhar was noticed as a writer thru this film. Film had amazing songs like Sirpi sedhukkadha tuned by C.N.Pandurangan Kuttakavi aka K.S.gopalakshrishnan wrote a comedy song describing how the person moved from a compounder job to a savory seller sung beautifully K.S.chellappa

Only film to have featured M.G.Ramachandran and Sivaji ganesan was Koondukkili(1954) directed by T.R.Ramanna. K.V.Mahadevan composed beautiful songs for this iconic film and he sang a comic folk song along with TMS and V.N.Sundaram Rathirikku buvvavukku lottery even in hunger labor community have fun in describing their poverty. how ironic

Next song to feature is from the famous Pakshiraja studios production "Malai kallan" featuring MGR and Banumathi. Music was composed by legendary S.M.Subbiah naidu who can forget the Sayubu role donned by MGR. unforgettable performance by Puratchi thalaivar Ehtanai kalam than yematruvar by TMS is popular even today. P.A.Peiyanayagi sang a beautiful folk penned by Thanjai Ramiahdoss "Oh Amma Oh Ayya O Saami" performed by Sayee Subbulakshmi sisters

AVM's Penn (1954) introduced Vaijayanthi Mala who went on to become a sought after actress in Hindi R.Sudharsanam master - permanent employee of AVM composed beautiful songs Who can forget Sonna sollai marandhidalama The folk number featured here is Vaijayanthi mala performing both male and female characters, sung by M.S.Rajeswari "Ettadha Kilaiyil kittadha kanipol iruppadhum serithana" penned by Veteran K.P.Kamatchi

RathaPasam (1954) in C.V.Sridhar's writing, R.S.Mani's direction and man who wrote vinnodum mugilodum later composed for this movie M.K.Athamanathan along with A.V. Natarajan Trichy loganathan sang this folk number "Dallu Dallu Dallu" a comic song describing economic situation and business market of those times.

Who can foget Vaanamedhil neendhi odum (2 versions 1 by Seergazhiyar and another one by Trichy loganathan) movie had a beautiful folk number for T.R.R. Kongu naatu sengarumbe penned by K.D.Santhanam

Based on 1001 arabian night stories T.R.Ramanna made a tamil folklore "Gulebakavali" featuring MGR,G.Varalakshmi & T.R.Rajakumari Music by MSV-TKR (Except for 1 song mayakkum malai pozhudhe was tuned by KVM for another movie but used in this) AG.Rathnamala and JPChandrababu sang a beautiful folk "Achu Nimirndha vandi"

Modern Theatres Kathanayagi(1955) starring padmini, T.R.Ramachandran had good songs tuned by G.Ramanathan and here is a beautiful folk by P.Leela and Swarnalatha (old singer) "Perum panathile pirandhu panathile valarndha"

If kadhalikka neramillai was the laugh riot of 60’s then “Kasethan KAdavulada” was the laugh riot of 70’s From Curtain raiser to curtain closer it was hilarious, hilarious & hilarious . Not a scene to be missed. Chitralaya Gopu sir who was associated with C.V.Sridhar wielded his “director cap” for the first time with this movie. What a debut for this man of humor and he created laugh ripple throughout the movie. Right from Scene # 1 till the last scene laugh was ensured . Produced by the established production house “AVM” Kasethan Kadavulada still was a low budget film. It was shot in a house (major portion) and may be a park or so but does it matter? No. what matters is how well was the film made and it was made to the dot. Gopu sir should be applauded for the perfect casting . Aachi MAnorma as the Dominating wife ,it was a tailor made role for her. Moorthy as her henpecked husband was perfect match. Muthuraman was too good . His humor in this fim was way different than his previous ones. If you observe the scenes where in he asks his father (Moorthy) to steal the money, the scene Where Lakshmi reveals her love and he repeats “enna pidikkum enna pidikkum” it was all new Muthuraman. If KB spotted the humor in Srikanth, Gopu rediscovered in 70s in this movie. (sadly srikanth was cast in all those Jayakanthan-Bhimsingh movies in serious roles) Srikanth’s humor Was very casual and his body language was amazing as well. But without one man there is no Kasethan Kadavulada and yes it was “Thengai Srinivasan”. Man this man had loads of talent and he definitely Will be in the list of TOP 5 comedians of Tamil film industry. He just stole the show as the fake sage in the movie. We will see in detail about his performance later. Lakshmi who also was good at humor was cast as the female lead and she was good but more than her it was Ramaprabha as the other “Rama” stole the show with “tharamatta tharamatta” . She was another fine comedian (who can forget her nadha nadha in U.U.Vaa) wish she was offered more roles in Tamil. Another amazing performance Came from MRR vasu as Ramaprabha’s dad. He was rocking in 70’s with variety of roles and he did this dad’s role with his usual antics and humor too. Sasikumar, Typist gopu, surulirajan, ramarao,Lakshmi Narayanan all provided their support very well. Coming to the story it’s the usual second wife denying money to her husband and his family from the 1’st wife but set to the tone of humor.. that’s the trick. Muthuraman and Srikanth are cousins dependent on Manorama for money. Sasikumar as Manorama’s brother enjoys life ofcourse with Sister’s money. On the other side Lakshmi who finishes her studies with the help of Typist gopu requests him to give her a conduct certificate. Being a doctor for mentally altered patients MRR vasu also requests certificate for his daughter ramaprabha who is being cured by the same doctor. Coincidentally both the girls have same name “Rama” and the certificate shift places ofcourse MRR vasu knows it but hushes it for his daughter’s future. Lakshmi lands in MAnorama’s house as her secretary with the conduct certificate which clearly states that if a thing is denied Lakshmi will become hysterical and thus Manorama keeps Lakshmi as her secretary. Deprived of money Muthuraman and Srikanth are furious and they wander in streets and end up in a tea stall run by their old friend Thengai Srinivasan . They renew their friendship . At the same time Manorama is very busy with the news of Swami sukranatha’s arrival. Muthuraman and srikanth receive a telegram which states that sukranandha is not coming. Muthu devices a plan to bring in thengai Srinivasan as the Swamiji so that it will easy for them to find out the whereabouts about the locker and money. Plan is set and the day comes when Thengai lands in the house as the Swami ji. Fun doubles and how Muthu & Thengai steal the required monay forms the rest of the story. Dialouges by Gopu sir is the main asset for the film. Let’s see how the humor travels throughout the film. The very first scene where Murthy pleads for 25 paise is hilarious followed by scenes at the mental hospital where in rama’s letter gets swapped is even more hilarious as well. Coming to the house where in Muthuraman is frustrated by his dad’s silence pleads Murthy and those scenes involving all 3 of them are hilarious as well. At one point Secretary Lakshmi falls for muthuraman And their love scenes are humor filled as well (including handkerchief exchange ), body language of both Muthuraman & Lakshmi too good. Now Icing on the cake is Thengai’s entry as Sukranandha.. The scenes where they train Thengai as sukranandha is the first step for the great laughter.. Thengai says “Mangulum Mangulum” and his face expression is worth a watch. Just watch Srikanth leaning on Muthuaman and asking “Dei idhu seripattu varuma andha tea kadakkaran nadu halla davara tumbler aathunanna ?” mindblowing … and now Thengai is all set to enter as Sukranandha. Very first scene of his entry into the house “Bakthargal kodi aana naan single aalu thaan” . the main word “Prashathama” every time he says will make u laugh. Pombalangalukku “Maanja kayiru” KAnavan alvo .. Adhe adhe ..all will create a ripple of laughter. Now Sukranandha resting with Muthuraman & Srikanth.. Laughter gets doubled .. Dei yaaruda indha kutty is what he says about Lakshmi .. Muthu says Lakshmi is his lover and Srikanth says yes “daily ramukku kerchief thara” . Vathippati kodu .. “Pora poka paatha konja naalla meyyalum samiyara aakiduveenga pola” Thengai at his best. Now this is the scene where in Gopu’s dialogue of Gopu sir should be hailed. Suruli visits Manorama’s house for Swamiji’s darshan and Thengai enters .. The mantram he says “Srikantha muthurama lakshmi manorma vennirada surul surul” just saying the names of all the actors in that scene is a thoughtful dialogue by Gopu sir. I just loved it and the way Thengai delivered it is just too good. Thengai asks “Sattuputtunu 8kulla oru number sollu” surula says “9” and then “Veppamboo” .thengai says “Kasappu kasappu “ Manorama goes gaga saying enna gnayanam “ veppampoonnu sonna vudane kasappu sollitare swami” . Lakshmi brings milk for Swamiji where in thengai is without his beard, scenes following it is hilarious as they are scared that Lakshmi might have seen him without beard.. Now they are ready to perform the pooja . Muthuraman trains thengai for the song (jambulingame jadadhara of course the song itself is hilarious) Sankaran thanigachalathukku enna venum.. ellathayum kazhitinkungada .. and finally they perform the pooja ofcourse with humor and after the pooja Thengai goes with manorama to perform pooja for the Locker as well. That travel to the safe room is another hilarious scene .. Thengai gets scared by looking at a picture drawn by Manorama’s friend and his face expression is mind blowing and finally he learns all the information about the safe and all those numbers.(enna ithana bulb prashathama sadhurama) Now the boys hatch the plan and both muthu and thengai goes to the safe but thengai is under the influence of alcohol so forgets the numbers and muthu hits him and then he comes to his senses but luckily during their fight right numbers are pressed and now the safe is open. Muthu ties thengai and sends him down and by the time thengai picks the money muthu leaves the rope and thengai’s dialogue after that is hilarious .. “polladha ulagam nu solluvangale .. panatha paatha udana kayithaya vidara” . The scenes following that are hilarious as well and all ends well with manorama relaxing her rules and Lakshmi proving her letter swap.. The main hero of the movie is Thengai.. No one would have done the Swami character better than him. Mellisai mannar gave fantastic music in this movie with hit songs like Indru vandha indha mayakkam, Jambu lingame (fusion kind of song) &,Mella pesungal,Aval enna ninaithal(my fav) a different variety al lyrics by Vaali. Kase than kadavula is still fresh for it’s story, dialouges and performance especially Thengai. Gopu sir’s directorial debut is still the classic comedy even after 44 years. Soulful Sunandha

Soulful Sunandha Chitralaya Sriram anna, not sure if this will be in your request or not but wanted to bring to light another koel from Raja sir’s nest. She is more sweeter and more soft and more melodious than the previous 2 koels for sure . yes none other than Sunandha. Sunandha was introduced by Raja sir in the Bharathiraja film “Puthumai pen” .Who can forget the duet with P.Jayachandran . “Kadhal Mayakkam azhagiya kangal thudikkum(lyrics:vairamuthu)” definitely both Jayachandran and Sunandha brought mayakkam to many music lovers with their voices .. Sunandha could not have asked for more.. A grand entry with a grand song .. quickly she was part of Raja’s gang.. yes “Poove sempoove un vasam varum”(lyrics:vaali) , many would have heard this song in Dasettan’s voice but the female version is equally good rendered by Sunandha. The Ever Famous “SEnbagame senbagame “ duet with mano and a short solo version even now makes us bright . Vella manam ulla machan velaiyadi onju vandhan from Chinna veedu with Malaysia vasudevan. She had a great number in Sirai paravai .. yes “aandham pongida pongida” both the duet and solo version (one of my fav). She sang along side SPB & Chitra in Enna samayalo(lent her voice for Aachi manorama ) yes “adiye mohana aduppadi enakkenna sondhama” yet another brilliant duet with Jayachandran in “en purushan thaan enakku mattumthan” – “poo mudithu pottu veitha vatta nila punnagayil paatezhuthum vannapura” . She along with SP shailaja sang a song with Raja sir himself “siruvani thanni kudichu “. Then came the ever famous lullaby one of Sunandha’s best “Mannava mannava mannadhi mannal allava” Vaali ayya’s lyrics, Raja sir’s tune and Sunandha’s voice for Sukanya made this song a classic. She also sang poonkatre inge vandhu vaazhthu with mano & uma ramanan from the same film. In the same year the sad version of Solli solli vandhadhinge from Senthamizh paatu with SPB was another great number. She sang for veteran actress sujatha. She sang another soulful pathos with Raja sir for Thaalatu – enakkena oruvarum illamal ponalum unakkena naan iruppen. Her singing continued in films like Dharma seelan, Sethupathi IPS. Pon vilangu had 3 songs for her .. 2 duets with Jayachandran. Oru kola kili vandhathe inbama(happy version), oru kola kili sonnadhe poimaya (sad version), ooty mala rotinile . all hit numbers. She also sang with SPB in the oru kola kili Jodi thanna theduthu theduthu mane (in the solo version Where she just sings few words like marvelous, wonderful etc ) . yet another duet with Jayachandran in the movie sevvandhi “semmene semmene un kitta sonnene” beautiful song . Nattukkota settiyaru with mano from Seeman She sang Indhariyo sundhariyo in Kadhalan for Rahman. He called her to be part of edhukku pondatti in Kizhakku seemayile. S.A.Rajkumar also has used Sunandha in his compositions. Manasum manasum serndhachu poomala thaan from Perumpulli was regular feature in radios at that time. She sang Nathcathira jannalil vanam etti paakkudhu with mano for Surya vamsam. She also sang in 3 hindi films for NAdeem shravan. Deva also gave her few chances(Sollava sollava oru kadhal kathai from mahaprabu)but after 1994-1995 she disappeared. According to an article in hindu she shifted from film music to Classical.. Anyone who knows her please request her to sing again. Unbearable voices torturing the music industry these days One of very few female singers who really impressed me and sunandha is one amongst them. @Chitralaya sriram anna – another koel from raja’s nest though not your request but mine . தேனிசைத் தென்றல் தேவா தேவாவும் கிராமியமும் அந்தக்கால வேதா அவர்களும் தனக்கு விருப்பமில்லாமல் பல ஹிந்தி மெட்டுக்களை தமிழில் கொடுத்தார் இந்த தேவா பல பாடல்களை சுட்டுக்கொடுத்தார் என்ற பலர் சொன்னாலும் தேவா என்ற இந்த இனிய எளிய தன்னடக்கமான மனிதரும் பல இனிய பாடல்களை தந்துள்ளார் என்பதில் எள்ளளவும் சந்தேகம் இருக்க முடியாது. பலரும் அவரது கானா பாடல்களுக்கு மயங்கியுள்ளனர், பலரும் அவரது மெலோடி பாடல்களுக்கு மயங்கியிருப்பர் ஆனால் நான் அவரது கிராமிய மனம் கமழும் பாடல்களுக்கு அடிமை என்றே சொல்வேன்.. ராஜா அவர்கள் குறைவான படங்களுக்கு இசையமைத்துக்கொண்டிருந்த காலம், ரகுமான் என்ற புயல் வீச துவங்கியிருந்த காலம் தேவா அவர்கள் சந்தர்ப்பம் கிடைத்த போதெல்லாம் மிகவும் அருமையான கிராமிய மனம் கமழும் பாடல்களை அள்ளி வழங்கினார். ஒரு தயாரிப்பாளர் தேவாவின் மெட்டை பிடிக்கவில்லை என்று சொல்ல அங்கு பாடல் எழுத வந்த வாலி ஐயா “ஆரம்பம் நல்லாயிருக்கு வயலெல்லாம் நல்லாருக்கு” என்று எழுதி தேவாவின் வாழ்க்கைக்கு விளக்கேத்தி வைத்தவர் வாலி ஐயா சந்திரபோஸ் தேவா ஜோடியாக குழு நடத்தி பின் தேவா பொதிகையில் வேலைபார்த்து போஸ் திரையில் ஜொலிக்க துவங்கி பின்னர் தான் தேவா அவர்களுக்கு வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தது. இருந்தாலும் 90’களின் முடிசூடா மன்னனாக திகழ்ந்தார் என்றால் அது மிகையில்லை தேவா இசையமைத்து வெளிவந்த முதல் படம் மாட்டுக்கார மன்னாரு அதிலும் ஏழிசை வேந்தர் டி,எம்.எஸ் பாரும் அழ்கான கிராமிய மெட்டு காவேரி கரை ஓரம் ஒரு கன்னி வந்தா .. தேவாவின் அடையாளமாக வந்த படம் ராம ராஜனின் மனசுக்கேத்த மகராசா .. அதிலும் அருமையான கிராமிய மனம் கமழும் பாடலாய் அமைந்த ஆத்து மேட்டு தோப்புக்குள்ளே .. சுசீலாம்மாவும் பாலுவும் அசத்திய பாடல் அடுத்து முரளி கெளதமி நடிப்பில் வந்த நம்ம ஊரு பூவாத்தா திரையில் பழைய கிராமிய பாடலின் சாயலில் வந்த ஆவாரம்பூவு ஒண்ணு நாரோடு .. சித்ரா யேசுதாஸ் குரலில் கிராமிய சோகம் அன்பாலயா பிரபாகரன் அவர்களின் தயாரிப்பில் முழுக்க முழுக்க புதுமுகங்களை வைத்து வந்த படம் வைகாசி பொறந்தாச்சு.. பிரசாந்த் நாயகனாக அறிமுகம் ஆகிய படம் .. இன்று தர்பார் பாடல் எந்த சாயலில் உள்ளதோ அதன் மூலம் கேலி கிண்டலை கிராமிய மெட்டில் தேவா பட்டி தொட்டியெங்கும் ஒலிக்க வைத்த “தண்ணி குடம் எடுத்து தங்கம் நீ நடந்து வந்தா” பாடல்.. அன்றைய இளைஞர்களின் தேசிய கீதமாய் ஒலித்த பாடல் மண்ணுக்கேத்த மைந்தன் திரையில் ஓடுகிர வண்டி ஓட ஒற்றுமையா ரெண்டு மாடு பாடல் காயல் சேக்முகமது பாடியது .. பழைய மாட்டு வண்டி பாடல்களின் சாயலில் ரொம்பவும் அழகாகவே போட்டிருப்பார் .. மணிவண்ணனின் புதுமனிதன் தேவாவிற்கு பேர் சொன்ன ஒரு படம் அதில் சித்ரா பாடிய ஏலேலங்குயிலே அடி ஏலேலங்குயிலே பாடல் பிரபலம். அதே படத்தில் யேசுதாஸ் பாடிய கிராமிய மனம் கமழும் சோகப்பாடல் வலைக்கு தப்பிய மீனு பாடல் நல்ல பாடல் மரிக்கொழுந்து ரமேஷ் அர்விந்த் ஐஸ்வர்யா நடிப்பில் தேவாவின் பாடல்களும் ஹிட்டானவை .. குறிப்பாக கண்ணதாசனே கண்ணதாசனே வந்துவிடு பாடல் மிகவும் பிரபலம். அதிலும் சித்ரா குரலில் பூங்குயில் நித்தம் கூவுற சத்தம் பாடல் அழகிய கிராமிய மெட்டு தேவாவிற்கு ஒரு தனி அடையாளம் தந்த படம் என்றால் அது கஸ்தூரி ராஜாவின் ஆத்தா உன் கோவிலிலே .. அதில் எல்லா பாடல்களுமே அருமையாய் அமைத்திருப்பார் தேவா (எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்தவை சின்னஞ்சிறு பூவே). அதில் ஒலித்த அழகான கிராமிய மெட்டு “ஒத்தையடி பாதையிலே ஊரு சனம் தூங்கையிலே” ஜிக்கியம்மாவும் பாலுவும் பாடிய பாடல் பட்டி தொட்டியெங்கும் ஒலித்த பாடல் மாங்கல்யம் தந்துனானே திரையில் மனோ சித்ரா பாடிய “காட்டு வழி பாதையில கண்டெடுத்த ஆணிமுத்து நான் புடிச்ச மாமன் மவன் தான்” மிகவும் அழகான கிராமிய மெட்டு எனக்கு நிகவும் பிடித்த பாடல் இந்த பாடலை கேட்காதவர்கள் கட்டாயம் கேளுங்கள் அடுத்து தேவாவிற்கு பேர் சொன்ன படம் பவித்ரனின் “வசந்தகால பறவை” அதில் செம்பருத்தி செம்பருத்தி பாடல் மிகவும் பிரபலம்.. அதிலும் ஒரு இனிய கிராமிய மெட்டில் அவர் அமைத்த பாடல் தைமாசம் பங்குனி போயி சித்திரை மாசம் .. பழைய பாடலில் சாயலில் இருந்தாலும் நல்ல மெட்டு சின்னதம்பிக்கு அடுத்து பி.வாசு இயக்கிய படம் “கிழ்க்கு கரை” படத்தின் அனைத்து பாடல்களும் வெற்றிப்பாடல்கள் ....... குறிப்பாக எனக்கென பிறந்தவ ரெக்ககட்டி பறந்தவ இவ தான் மிகவும் பிரபலம் இதே படத்தில் சிலு சிலுவென காத்து, சன்னதி வாசலில் வந்தது பூந்தேரு பாடல்கள் கிராமிய மெட்டை எளியமையாக்கி கொடுத்திருப்பார் தேவா .. ஆர்.சுந்தரராஜன் இயக்கத்தில் வந்த ஒயிலாட்டம் திரையில் நல்ல கிராமிய மெட்டுக்களை தந்தார் தேவா - தெப்ப குளத்துக்குள்ள தினம் பார்த்து சிரிச்ச மச்சான் என்ற பாடல் நல்ல அழகான பாடல் வி.எம்.சி ஹனீபா அவர்கள் இயக்கத்தில் வந்த வாசலில் ஒரு வெண்ணிலா (ராஜா மகள் பாடல் மிகவும் பிரபலம் பலரும் இது ராஜாவின் பாடல் என்றே நினைத்ததுண்டு). இதே படத்தில் யேசுதாஸ் குரலில் “என் ஊரு மதுர பக்கம்” கிராமிய மெட்டைத்தழுவி வந்த பாடல் வைதேகி வந்தாச்சு படத்திலும் சில நல்ல கிராமிய மெட்டுக்களை தந்தார் தேவா. இதில் மெல்லிசை மன்னரின் குரலில் ஒரு பாடல் மிகவும் அருமையாக இருக்கும். தூதுபோ செல்லக்ளியே படத்திலும் நல்ல பாடல்களை தந்தார் தேவா .. குறிப்பாக பாலு சித்ரா பாடிய ஏனோ எனை அழைக்கலானாய் தெருக்கூஉத்து பாடலை காதல் பாடலாக்கி அழகூட்டியிருப்பார் தேவா அவர்கள். இதே திரையில் ஸ்வர்ணலதா பாடிய adam tease நல்ல கிராமிய மெட்டு வெளிவராத நாடோடிக் காதல் திரையில் கூட நல்ல கிராமிய மெட்டுக்கள் தந்தார் தேவா .”மாலை கருக்கல் வந்து” க்ரிஷ்ணராஜ் சித்ரா குரல்களில் நல்ல பாடல் மணிவாசத்திற்கு தொடர்ந்து இசையமைத்தார் தேவா .. அப்படி ஒரு படல் பெரிய கவுண்டர் பொண்ணு அதிலும் பாடலகள் நல்ல ரகம் . இருந்தும் அந்த ஒரு பேர் ஒரு சூப்பர் ஹிட் இன்னும் வராமல் இருந்தது தேவாவிற்கு முரளி நடிப்பில் வெளிவந்த தங்கராசு திரையில் ஒலித்த பூங்காற்றே தினமும் தேடுறேன்.. மிகவும் அருமையான பாடல். வானொலியிலும் அடிக்கடி ஒலித்த பாடல் (பாலு சித்ரா சந்தோஷமாகவும், ஸ்வர்ணலதா சோகமாகவும் இசைக்கும் கீதம்) தேவாவிற்கு சூப்பர் ஹிட்டாக அமைந்த படம் மணிவண்ணனின் “தெற்குத் தெரு மச்சான்". "தென்னமர தோப்புக்குள்ளே குயிலே குயிலே" சூப்பர் ஹிட்டாக அமைந்த பாடல். நல்ல கிராமிய மனம் கமழும் பாடல். இதே திரையில் தெற்குத் தெரு மச்சானே பாடலும் மிகவும் பிரபலம் பிரசாந்த் மோகினி நடிப்பில் வந்த உனக்காக பிறந்தேன் திரையில் “பெண் வேணும் ஒரு பெண் வேணும் “ எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த பாடல் .. இன்றளவும் என் மனதிற்கு இனிய பாடல். அதே போல் கே.பாக்யரஜின் அம்மா வந்தாச்சு பாடல்களும் அமர்க்களமே .. குறிப்பக நந்தினி நந்தினி பாடல் (மனோ, ஸ்வர்ணலதா) குரலில் மிகவும் பிரபலம்.. இது உனக்காக பாடும் ராகம் பாலு, சுசீலாம்மா, சித்ரா குரல்களில் ஒரு வித்தியாசமான பாடல் இருந்தாலும் தேவாவிற்கு ஏறுமுகமாய் அமைந்த படம் கே.பாலசந்தரின் தயாரிப்பில் சுரேஷ்கிருஷ்ணா இயக்கத்தில் சூப்பர் ஸ்டார் நடிப்பில் வெளிவந்த “அண்ணாமலை” எல்லா பாடல்களும் கலக்கிய படம் அண்ணாமலை அண்ணாமலை , வந்தேண்டா பால்காரன் பாடல்கள் எல்லாம் நல்ல கிராமிய மனம் கமழும் பாடல்களே பட்டத்து ராணி( விஜயகுமாருக்கு ஜோடி கெளதமி ஹி ஹி ) , பொண்டாட்டி ராஜ்ஜியம், கோட்டை வாசல் என நல்ல பாடலகள் கொடுத்து வந்தாலும் ஒரு நட்சத்திர அந்தஸ்து கிடைத்தது பவித்ரனியின் இயக்கத்தில் சரத்குமார்,ரோஜா நடிப்பில் வந்த “சூரியன்” அதில் எல்லாமே ஹிட் பாடல்கள் என்றால் கிராமிய மெட்டில் மனோரமா ஆச்சி நடத்தும் அந்த சீமந்த பாடல் “கொட்டுங்கடி கும்மி” ரொம்ப அழகான பாடல் .. தொடர்ச்சியாக சரத்குமார் கனகா நடிப்பில் சாமுண்டி படத்தின் பாடல்கள் அன்றைய காலத்தில் மிகவும் ஹிட்டான பாடல்கள் .. முத்து நகையே முழு நிலவே , கண்ணுல பால ஊத்த எல்லாமே ரொம்ப அழகான பாடலகள் குறிப்பாக வாலியின் வரிகளில் முத்து நகையே மிகவும் பிரபலம்.. அதிலும் கிராமிய மனம் கமழும் பாடல்களாய் இருந்தாலும் பாலு குரலில் ”மண்ணத் தொட்டு கும்பிட்டுட்டு” பாடல் அழகான கிராமிய மெட்டு. இப்படியே தேவா அவர்களின் 50’வது படமாக வந்தது கஸ்தூரி ராஜாவின் “சோலையம்மா”.படம் முழுக்க கிராமிய மெட்டுக்கள் தான். (ஜெயசுதா, பானுப்ரியா) .. ஒரு சந்தன மேனியில் மிகவும் இனிமையான பாடல் . அதே படத்தில் ஒரு அழகான கிராமிய மெட்டு ஊசி மலக்காடு தொடர்ச்சியாக பல படங்கள் பேண்ட்மாஸ்டர், பாஸ்மார்க், தங்க பாப்பா ... பிரபு குஷ்பு நடிப்பில் வந்த மறவன் படப்பாடலக்ள் எல்லாமே ஹிட் குறிப்பாக சந்திரன கூப்பிடுங்க, சிங்கார குயிலே . அதில் குஷ்பு பாடும் பழைய கிராமிய பாடல் போல் அமைந்த “கொண்டையிலே பூ முடிஞ்சு” பாடலும் அருமை . மணிவண்ணன் பானுப்ரியா நடிப்பில் வெளிவந்த சக்ரவர்த்தி படம் ஓடவில்லை ஆனால் அதில் கவுண்டரின் காமெடி ட்ராக் மிகவும் பிரபலம். அதில் ஒலித்த வாழ்த்தோப்புக்குள்ள வாலிபத்து காத்தடிக்குது மனோ ஜானகி குரலில் நம்ம கலகலப்பான கிராமிய மெட்டு இளைய தளபதி விஜய் நடித்த விஷ்னு திரையில் சிங்கார கண்ணுக்கு மை கொண்டு வா நந்தலாலா பாடல் கிராமியத்தை தழுவிய மெட்டு .. அருண்மொழி,சித்ரா குரல்களில் சரத்குமாரின் நாடோடி மன்னன் திரையில் மானாமதுரையில என்னோட மாமன் குதிரையில பாடலும் நல்ல கிராமிய மனம் கமழும் பாடல் 1995’ல் அஜித் அவர்களுக்கு மிகப்பெரிய வெற்றிப்படமாக அமைந்த ஆசைக்கு இசையமைத்து அந்த ஆண்டின் சிறந்த இசையமைப்பாளர் விருது பெற்றார். கொஞ்ச நாள் பொறு தலைவா பாடல் வாலியின் வரிகளில் மிகவும் அழகான பாடல் காதலர்களின் தேசிய கீதமாய் அமைந்தது ... அதுவும் நாட்டுப்புற மெட்டை கொஞ்சம் மென்மையாக மாற்றியிருப்பார் தேவா .. தாய்க்குலமே கிராமியமும் கானாவும் கலந்த மெட்டு ஏ.வெங்கடேஷ் இயக்கத்தில் சரத்குமார் சுகன்யா நடிப்பில் வந்த மகாபிரபு திரையிலும் தேவா ஜொலித்தார் (சொல்லவா சொல்லவா ஒரு காதல் காதை இதமான காதல் பாடல் வாலியின் வரிகளில்). அதே படத்தில் பாட்டெடுட்த்தேன் பச்சைக்கிளியே பாடல் கிராமிய மெட்டில் அமைந்த பாடல் அஜித் பிரசாந்த் இணைந்து நடித்த கல்லூரி வாசல் படத்திலும் தேவா ஜொலித்தார் (என் மனதை கொள்ளையடித்தவளே, வனக்கிளியே, லயோலா காலேஜ் என எல்லாம் ஹிட் பாடல்கள்) கலைஞர் கருணாநிதியின் திரைக்கதை வசனத்தில் செல்வா சுகன்யா நடித்த “புதிய பராசக்தி” படத்தில் மலேசியா வாசுவும் சித்ராவும் பாடிய ஆத்தோரம் மல்லிகையே அழகான கிராமிய மெட்டு முதல் முதலாய் இணைந்த படம் “தமிழ்ச்செல்வன்” அதில் ஆசை கேப்ப களிக்கு ஆச பாடல் அழகான கிராமிய மெட்டு .. 1993ல் அரவிந்த்ஸ்வாமி சுகன்யா நடிப்பில் வந்த தாலாட்டு படத்தை இயக்கிய டி.கே.ராஜேந்திரன் மீண்டும் 1996’ல் ஜெயராம் சுகன்யா நடிப்பில் இயக்கிய படம் பரிவட்டம். இதில் கோவைசரளா மணிவண்ணன் நகைச்சுவை மிகவும் பிரபலம் இதில் குண்டூரு குண்டு மல்லி கொண்டையில வச்சுகிட்டு மிகவும் அழகான கிராமிய மனம் கமழும் பாடல் 1996ல் தேவாவிற்கு கிடைத்த பம்பர் லாட்டரி கமலின் அவ்வை சண்முகி .. மனுஷன் எல்லா பாடலகளுக்கும் மெனக்கிட்டிருப்பார்.. எல்லாமே அருமையான பாடல்கள் தொடர்ந்து கோகுலத்தில் சீதை என அமர்க்களமாக ஜொலித்தார் தேவா .. அடுத்து இயக்குனர் சிகரம் கே.பாலசந்தர் படமான கல்கிக்கு இசையமைக்கும் வாய்ப்பு (என்ன அருமையான பாடல்கள் .. ) அதிலும் ஒரு கிராமிய மெட்டை தழுவி ஒரு பாடல் செய்திருப்பார் பூமிப்பொண்ணு சூரியன சுத்துதே சுத்துதே .... அருமை .. மற்றபடி சிங்கப்பூர் சேல , எழுதுகிறேன், பூவே நீ ஆடவா, சீமான் அவர்களின் இயக்கத்தில் வந்த முதல் படம் “பாஞ்சாலங்குறிச்சி” அதில் தேவா அவர்களின் கிராமிய மெட்டுக்கள் எல்லாமே அருமையானவை . ஆத்தோரம் தோப்புக்குள்ள, உன் உதட்டோர செவப்பே, பாரதிராஜாவின் குழுவில் இருந்த ரத்னகுமார் தனியாக இயக்கிய சேனாதிபதி சத்யராஜ் சுகன்யா நடிப்பில் மூணு முழம் மல்லியப்பூ என்னை முட்ட கண்ணால் பாக்குதடி மிகவும் அழகான கிராமிய மெட்டு அதே படத்தில் என் இதயத்தை திருடிவிட்டாய் ஒரு வித்தியாசமான பாடல் தர்மசக்கரம் திரையில் ஒரு அழகான பாடல் “மாமர அணிலே மாமர அணிலே” சித்ரா லெட்சுமணன் இயக்கத்தில் பிரபு நடித்த பெரிய தம்பி படத்தில் ஸ்வர்ணலதா பாடிய வெள்ளிகிழமை சாயங்காலம் விரலத் தொட்டாண்டி என்ற பாடலும் நல்ல கிராமிய பாடல். சேரனின் முதல் படமான பாரதி கண்ணம்மா படத்தின் வெற்றிக்கு தேவாவின் இசையும் ஒரு காரணம் .. அதில் தென்றலுக்கு தெரியுமா தெம்மாங்கு பாட்டு அழகான கிராமிய மெட்டு கஸ்தூரி ராஜா இயக்கத்தில் நெப்போலியன் ஊர்வசி குஷ்பு நடிப்பில் வந்த எட்டுப்பட்டி ராசா திரையில் தேவா கிராமிய மெட்டுகளில் ராஜாங்கம் நடத்தினார்.. குறிப்பாக பஞ்சு மிட்டாய் சேல கட்டி . ஜானகியுடன் மலேசிய வாசு கலக்கிய பாடல் தேவாவின் கலக்கல் மெட்டு பி.வாசுவின் வாய்மையே வெல்லும் திரையில் குயில் பாட்டு பாடலும் அழகான கிராமிய மனம் வீசும் பாடல் ராஜ்கபூர் இயக்கத்தில் சத்யராஜ் மீனா நடிப்பில் வந்த வள்ளல் நல்ல படம் . அதிலும் தேவாவின் பாடல்கள் அழகு குறிப்பாக வெத்தல வெத்தல, புளியம்பட்டி(மனோரமாவின் குரலில்) கிராமிய மனம் வீசும் பாடல்கள் வி.சேகர் இயக்கத்தில் பொங்கலோ பொங்கலில் அப்பனுக்கு பாடம் சொன்ன அதுவும் நல்ல கிராமிய மனம் கமழும் பாடல். வசந்த் இயக்கத்தில் விஜய் சூர்யா நடிப்பில் நேருக்கு நேர் தேவாவிற்கு புகழ் சேர்த்த படம் பி.வாசு இயக்கத்தில் ஜெயராம் குஷ்பு நடித்த பத்தினி திரையில் ஆலப்புழை அழகா அச்சன்கோயில் ஆணழகா நல்ல கிராமிய மனம் வீசும் காதல் பாடல் இந்த கட்டுரை தேவாவின் கிராமிய மனம் கமழும் பாடலக்ள் குறித்து தான்.. சுரேஷ்கிருஷ்ணாவின் இயக்கத்தில் பாலு,ஸ்வர்ணலதா) மிகவும் அழகான கிராமிய காதல் வண்டிக்கட்டி போகும்போது 2 பெண்கள் பாடுவதாக வரும் சோளக்காட்டு பாதையில மிகவும் அழகான பாடல் .. எசப்பாட்டு சாயலில் அமைந்த பாடல் ஸ்வர்ணலதாவுடன் உன்னிகிருஷ்ணன் தெற்கு தெச காத்து மலேசியா வாசுவின் குரலில் மிகவும் அழகான பாடல். இன்றும் என் காரில் அடிக்கடி ஒலிக்கும் பாடல் மாமரக்குயிலே .. எல்லாமே என் பொண்டாட்டி தான் . வி.சேகரின் இயக்கத்தில் கொத்தமல்லி தோட்டத்துல குண்டுமல்லி வாசம் அழகான கிராமிய மனம் வீசும் பாடல் மீண்டும் கஸ்தூரி ராஜாவின் வீரம் விளைஞ்ச மண்ணு திரையில் ஒலித்த உத்து உத்து பாக்காதீங்க மாமா மிகவும் அழகான கிராமிய மனம் கமழும் பாடல் , ஆசப்பட்டு செஞ்சு வெச்சேன் கொழுக்கட்ட பாடல் குறும்பான கிராமிய பாடல் விஜயகாந்த் லைலா நடிப்பில் வந்த கள்ளழகர் திரையில் ஒலித்த வாராரு வாராரு கள்ளழகர் வாராரு இன்றும் மதுரை சித்திரை திருவிழா காலத்தில் ஒலிக்கும் பாடல் பிரபுதேவா நடித்த நினைவிருக்கும் வரையில் கானாவின் உச்சமாக “ஊத்திகினு கடிச்சுக்கவா “ இருந்தாலும் அதே படத்தில் “திருப்பதி ஏழுமலை வெங்கடேசா” மனோ கிருஷ்ணராஜ் பாடிய அழகான கிராமிய மனம் கமழும் பாடல் அதே படத்தில் உன்னிமேனன் சுஜாதாவை மிகவும் வித்தியாசமாக பாட வைத்து வந்த கிராமிய துள்ளலிசை பாடல் “அன்பே நீ மயிலா குயிலா” தேவாவிற்கும் சரி அஜித்திற்கும் உச்ச அந்தஸ்தை கொடுத்த படம் வாலி .. அதில் எல்லாமே அமர்க்களமான பாடல்கள் கார்த்திக் அஜித் மீனா நடிப்பில் வந்த ஆனந்த பூங்காற்றே படத்தில் எனக்கு பிடித்த பாடல் செம்மீனா . அதில் கிராமிய மெட்டில் அமைந்த பாடல் “பாட்டுக்கு பாலைவனம்” அழகான பாடல் கே.சுபாஷ் இயக்கத்தில் “ஏழையின் சிரிப்பில்” படத்திலும் நல்ல கிராமிய மெட்டில் பல பாடல்கள் அமைந்தன.. கரு கரு கருப்பாயி, யப்பா யப்பா ஐயப்பா எல்லாமே நல்ல பாடல்கள் முகவரி, சந்தித்தவேளை, குஷி, அப்பு என எல்லாமே ஏறுமுகம் தான். சேரனின் வெற்றிக்கொடி கட்டு படத்தில் ஒலித்த “கறுப்புதான் எனக்கு புடிச்ச கலரு” தில்லேல்லே தில்லேல்லெ என கிராமிய மெட்டில் அசத்தினார் தேவா மனு நீதி படத்தில் மயிலாடும் பாறை .. அழகான கிராமிய பாடல் மாயன் திரையில் மாயவனே மாயவனே மல்லிகப்பூ நாயகனே பாரதிராஜாவுடன் மீண்டும் இணைந்த படம் “கடல் பூக்கள்” அதில் ஆடு மேயுதே .. பாடல் அழகான கிராமிய மெட்டு. தொடர்ந்து பம்மல் கே சம்மந்தம் என கமல் படத்திலும் கலக்கினார் தேவா அஜித் நடித்த ரெட் படம் சரியா போகாவிட்டாலும் பாடல் விஷயத்தில் தேவா குறை வைக்கவில்லை . ஒல்லி குச்சி உடம்புக்காரியும் அழகான கிராமிய மெட்டு பஞ்சதந்திரம், விரும்புகிறேன், பகவதி என்று பாடல்கள் வெற்றி தொடர்ந்தன சொக்கத்தங்கம் படத்தில் என்ன நெனச்சே பாடல் மிகவும் அழகான கிராமிய மெட்டு இப்படி பல கிராமிய மனம் கமழும் பாடலகளை தந்தவர் தேனிசைத் தென்றல் தேவா .. எளிமையின் இருப்பிடம் , மெல்லிசை மன்னரை இசை தெய்வமாகவும் மானசீக குருவாக கருதியவர். கிடைத்த வாய்ப்புகளில் நல்ல பாடல்களை வழங்கினார் தேவா .. குறிப்பாக எனக்கு அவரின் கிராமிய மெட்டுக்கள் மிகவும் பிடித்தவை. ஒரு இனிய எளிய மனிதருக்கு ஒரு Sophisticated Balachander aka Sundaram Balachander. Did the name ring a bell? Oh yes the man who was an Ace film maker who unfortunately has been forgotten by many. Sundaram Balachander was born in Chennai though his origin is near NAnnilam. NAnnilam seems to be really a “Nannilam” in yielding 2 balachander(s) both being great creators in their own way. His family members were already associated with the film world it wasn’t easy for the young balachander to act in a drama at the age of 3 years. He forayed into films at the age of 10 in the movie “Seetha kalyanam” in 1933. He played the role of a Kanjira player. He appeared in quite a few movies as child star and made his debut as hero in 1948 film “Idhu Nijama” and that film was a thriller movie may be that paved the way for SB to make thriller flicks. He also appeared in the movie “Khaidhi” in the same year 1948 which also was a crime thriller. Since he came from a family with bundle of arts flowing in Music was in his blood thus he was the composer for his debut movie as well. Yes he composed the songs for the movie “Idhu Nijama” and his tunes were popular as well. Songs like “Aanandham adainthene” and ofcourse he also composed a beautiful tune mixing thyagaraja kirthi and a western tune which was quite popular during that time. Following khaidhi he acted in movies like Rajambal, devaki, Rani etc. With khaidhi he elevated himself as director. He was man of many talents yes musician, director, editor, singer and what not. While on one side he was acting and composing music his stronghold in Carnatic music was not going away. He was pushing himself in both arenas. AVM Chettiyar who was impressed with SB worked with him for a project thus “Andha Naal” was born. A remarkable venture by SB , rather bold those days to make a film without a song when others were making films with 10-20 songs this man silenced the critics with the silence in the film. Yes Film had no songs and yet it was a super hit movie. Useless critics even now can say it was adaptation from English film but those illogical idiots can bark anything but adaptation and presenting it to a different set of audience takes a lot of effort and this man did with par excellence.. Andha naal is considered as a pioneer for many film makers even today. Right from the gun shot in the opening scene movie is a well made thriller with wonderful performances by the then new comer Sivaji ganesan, Pandaribai, T.K.Balachandran and ofcourse Javert Seetharaman as the CID(who was responsible for dialogues as well). Stellar performances from the actors and gripping screenplay made this movie stand out and till date it’s been the reference manual for many film makers and thus SB set Hollywood standards to Kollywood movies. Andha naal earned President’s medal in 1954 for the best Tamil movie. SB continued as actor in movies like Penn, Koteesawaran & Maragadham. Can we forget ever beautiful “Kalyanam aaha kalyanam” for which JP.Chandrababu lent his voice for SB. Personally I was impressed with his wonderful performance in “Doctor Savithiri”. Another thriller where in SB played the sikh role impressing Anjali devi and turns out to be the killer. P.Leela’s “then suvai mevum” is a class song by G.Ramanathan. Following Andha naal he made “Avan Amaran” which was impressive as well. Kannamba, KRRamasami & Rajasulochana gave wonderful performance. Avana Ivan is the next movie SB made under his own Production(SB creations). Once again a wonderful thriller. Kids Kutti PAdmini & Master Sridhar witnesses SB murdering his wife Lakshmi Rajyam. They are shocked to see him getting engaged to their sister Vasanthi B.A. The whole story revolves about how the kids fight hard to unveil the truth. Wonderful performances by all and ofcourse SB gave wonderful music as well. P.Suseela’s Kalyana thirunaal & Kalyana penne kalangadhe kannu(LRE & Renuka) both are quite popular even now. Like Andha naal SB made another classic in the name of “Bommai”. Another well-made adapted Toy story. Once again a thriller story where in a bomb planted in a toy to kill the hero and how the toy gets to several hands and how they try to trace the toy forms the rest of the story. L.Vijayalakshmi as the hero’s sister gave a nice performance while SB, V.S.Raghavan & others performed well. Bommai stands out for various reasons. Toy story was first of a kind for Tamil audience. Introducing the entire cast and crew of the film at the closing cards was another new feature which was quite impressive and amongst the playback singers you can spot the young & lean K.J.Yesudas who made his debut to TFM with this film (Neeyum bommai naanum bommai). SB’s compositions in Bommai impressed everyone especially “Engo Pirandhavaram engo valarandhavaram” is a fantastic composition by SB , beautifully sung by P.Susheela & well performed by the ace dancer L.Vijayalakshmi written by Vidwan Lakshmanan. Bommai is a class of it’s own and SB need to be applauded for having such a thought to make this film for tamil audience. Following Bommai SB made another Hitchcock Thriller “Nadu Iravil”. Major sundarrajan & pandaribai as the old couple and SB as the family doctor performed so naturally. Story is about inviting all the relatives to settle the property as Major is in his last days due to cancer, but the relatives get killed one by one finally the truth is revealed. It was indeed a spine chiller. As usual SB rocked with his scintillating music as well. “kan kaattum jadaiyile” by P.Susheelamma(for sowcar janaki) & Naalu pakkam yeri by LRE (for V.R.thilagam) were fantastic compositions. Just 2 songs for the apt situation in the film and SB rocked. BGscore was impressive as well. Unfortunately this marked the last venture of SB in films. Caught between his 2 passions he chose Music and continued to be the greatest Vainika. Having quit film making he took music seriously and he knew to play 40 instruments but Veena became closer to his heart and thus experimented with veena and created his own way of playing veena. Having moved away from films he gave numerous veena concerts and even today called as “Veena” Balachander thus veena stuck with his name. Carnatic music lovers still remember SB as the great vainika and do talk about him while film makers have forgotten this highly talented tall(literally he was tall) film maker with immense knowledge of film making & music. Nevertheless SB is no less than KB in his own way and what a musician he was. In simple words a “Brilliant Personality to be remembered always”. Will come back with another artist soon. Narada in Movies ============= Narada Muni aka Sage Narada known for causing rift between many but finishes it in a good note hence the saying "Naradar kalagam nanmaiyil mudiyum" My dad while watching mythological films jokingly will quote Narada as the SMS meaning the messenger between lokas ha ha i.e he is even faster than light in carrying messages The image of Narada portrayed in stories/puranas is that of a bachelor saint carrying veena(mahati) & kharthala with naughtiness in his eyes. Many movies have been made with many actors playing Narada role, some playing it with ease while struggled to pull it off. We all know Bharat ratna Smt M.S.Subbulakshmi playing the role of Narada in Savithiri Another lengendary singer N.C.Vasantha kokilam played Narada role in Krishna vijayam Not all actors impressed me as Narada because character needs naughty eyes, sense of humor and innocent face and witty body language and in my opinion only few could pull it off so well The only actor who tops the list with his mind blowing performance as Narada muni was telugu actor Kanta rao. He is famous for Janapada/folklore action hero displaying sword fighting skills thus called as "Andhra MGR" was able to adapt to the innoncent, witty,funny Narada role in many telugu movies and I've not seen any one else pulling it off to an extent what Kanta rao did. In movies like Srikrishna Thulabaram,Shri Krishna Pandaviyam,Deepavali Another actor who impressed me was Akkineni Nageswararao who played Narada in many movies especially in the movie Krishna Maya (naradar kalyanam) where in lord krishna transforms his mahati veena into a lady and gets narada married to her and ANR's performance as the trapped narada is impressive. He played narada in Bhookailas as well. Actors like chalam, harnath, shoban babu, kalyanam raghuramiah and even Relangi all have portayed Narada to their best especially I loved chalam and harnath for their comic timing and face expression which is a must for the naradar role NTR's son Balakrishna, Veteran Carnatic singer Balamurali krishna have also played the role of narada but not so impressive though. In Tamil Nadigar Thilagam, T.R.Mahalingam and to an extent Cho portrayed the Role of Narada at ease. Can we forget Nadigar Thilagam causing the rift amongst Saraswathi, Lakshmi and Parvathi in "Saraswathi Sabatham" T.R.Mahalingam as the witty Naradar in Agathiyar and Sri krishna leela played the role with ease with funny expressions, witty humor and in my opinion he performed in narada role than the movies where he donned the role of hero ha ha . Cho as Narada in Ganga Gowri was impressive, with his big and naughty eyes he could pull it of very well and his dialouges with lord krishna(played by sivakumar)were enjoyable Actors like sivakumar, avm rajan too have tried their hands at this role Even Master Sridhar, Venniradai moorthy have played this role with ease. In kannada it's always Anant nag who in my opinion was perfect fit for the role of Narada and he did pull it off very well in movies like Narada vijaya and Bhakta prahalada Rajkumar himself played the role of narada in maha sati anusuya and we all know anna can portray any role with ease Actors like Ramakrishna and Srinath have donned Narada role and lived up to the mark in those films as well Kalyan kumar played the role of Narada in the kannada version of AVM's BhooKailas In hindi the famous villain actor Jeevan played this role with ease and before turning into a ruthless villain of bollywood he played the role of sage narada 61 times between 40's till early 70s. These are few actors who have impressed me in the role of Narada muni and i'm not aware any new serials or movies so please pardon me if i have missed any name.
